NOX NOVACULA – Intervista alla band
Ho avuto il piacere di intervistare la band americana di gothic rock Nox Novacula dopo il bellissimo concerto al Freakout di Bologna.
Ciao ragazzi, benvenuti su Tuttorock, piacere di conoscervi, come va il tour europeo?
Ezra: Piacere di conoscerti! Sì, sta andando molto bene, molto meglio di quanto ci aspettassimo! È molto divertente girare l’Europa e incontrare persone amichevoli ovunque.
Zu: Sì, ci stiamo divertendo molto insieme! Le persone sono gentili e interessate a noi, avremmo dovuto portare più vinili, molte persone li hanno acquistati, ne abbiamo portati una cinquantina e li abbiamo venduti tutti in una settimana, scusateci!
Hai registrato due EP, quando un album?
Ezra: Quando? Speriamo di registrarlo entro la primavera del 2020.
Come vi siete conosciuti e quando avete deciso di formare una band?
Zu: Oh, è una lunga storia di oltre dieci anni.
Ezra: Sì, circa dieci anni!
Charlotte: Siamo amici da molto tempo, Ezra e Zu avevano una band prima, poi io ed Ezra abbiamo lavorato per un pò insieme, quindi abbiamo parlato di formare una band ed è successo, l’abbiamo fatto.
Sembra che abbiate fuso i suoni di Joy Division con quelli dei Christian Death, sono i vostri artisti preferiti o ne avete altri?
Zu: Oh sì, amiamo altre band.
Charlotte: Abbiamo un sacco di influenze, siamo sicuramente fan dell’album Death Cult della band The Cult, suona molto rock and roll ma è più oscuro e più punk rock.
Ezra: Fields of the Nephilim.
Voi venite da Seattle, una città famosa per la scena grunge degli anni ’90, com’è oggi la scena musicale in generale in quella città? E la scena gotica e post-punk negli Stati Uniti è viva?
Ezra: Penso che per il tipo di musica che suoniamo noi ci siano poche altre band a Seattle, ci sono molte band metal, una grande scena metal e il grunge è decisamente finito. È divertente quando qualcuno viene a Seattle alla ricerca di uno spettacolo grunge ma noi rispondiamo che non ci sono più spettacoli grunge. Portland, che è molto vicino a noi, e Vancouver, hanno molte più band simili a noi. La scena musicale della Pacifico Nord-Occidentale è davvero ottima per questo tipo di musica.
C’è qualche radio o TV che trasmette brani della scena gotica, darkwave o post-punk negli Stati Uniti?
Charlotte: Sì, abbiamo KEXP, trasmettono diversi generi musicali e organizzano alcuni spettacoli. Esistono poi molte stazioni radio online indipendenti.
È facile trovare posti dove suonare negli Stati Uniti?
Ezra: Penso che ci siano molte persone che vogliono vedere band come noi, ma quando andiamo in una piccola città non sappiamo mai quante persone verranno allo spettacolo, quindi è divertente.
Charlotte: È più difficile che qui in Italia.
Potete dirmi qualcosa dei vostri piani futuri?
Ezra: Il nostro principale piano per il futuro è quello di finire l’LP, dopo inizieremo un tour negli Stati Uniti e vorremmo tornare qui perché ci stiamo divertendo molto.
Zu: Spero in un tour in Messico e in Sud America.
Charlotte: L’Italia è fantastica, quindi vogliamo tornare qui.
Dav: Sì, è sempre un piacere suonare qui, ho suonato qui un paio di volte in passato con un’altra band. Amo questo Paese.
Grazie mille per questa intervista, volete dire qualcosa ai lettori di questa intervista?
Charlotte: Ringrazio chiunque ci ascolti, lo considero il regalo più grande che potessi immaginare, siamo molto felici di suonare davanti a questa gente fantastica.
Ezra: Grazie a chi apprezza la nostra musica.
Zu: Grazie a tutti, è molto divertente vedere gente ballare sulla nostra musica.

I had the pleasure of interviewing the American goth rock ’n’ roll band Nox Novacula after the wonderful concert at the Freakout in Bologna.
Hi guys, welcome to the webzine Tuttorock, nice to meet you, how is the European tour going?
Ezra: Nice to meet you! It is going very well, a lot better than we expected! It is very funny going around Europe and meeting friendly people everywhere.
Zu: Yes, we are having a lot of fun together! People are nice and interested to us, we should have brought more vinyls, many people bought them, we brought about fifty of them and we sold them all in a week, sorry!
You have recorded two EPs, when an album?
Ezra: When? We hope to register it by the spring of 2020.
How did you meet and when did you decide to form a band?
Zu: Oh, it’s a long story of over ten years.
Ezra: Yes, about ten years!
Charlotte: We are friends for a long time, Ezra and Zu had a band before, Ezra and I worked for a while together, so, we talked about forming a band and it just happened, we did it.
You seem to have fused the sounds of Joy Division with those of Christian Death, are they your favorite artists or do you have other ones?
Zu: Oh yes, we love other bands.
Charlotte: We have a lot of influences, we are definitely fans of the album Death Cult of the band The Cult, it has rock and roll feeling and sound but still darker and still more punk rock.
Ezra: Fields of the Nephilim.
You come from Seattle, a city famous for the grunge scene of the 90s, how is the music scene in general in that city today? And is the gothic and post-punk scene in the United States alive now?
Ezra: I think for the type of music we are doing there are few other bands in Seattle, there are a lot of metal bands, a big metal scene and grunge is definitely over. It’s funny when someone come in Seattle searching for a grunge show but we respond that there are no more grunge shows. Portland, which is very close to us, and Vancouver, have more dark band like us. The Pacific North West music scene is really good for this type of music.
Is there any radio or TV that broadcasts songs from the gothic, darkwave or post-punk scene in the USA?
Charlotte: Yes, we have KEXP, they broadcast different genres of music and they organize some shows. There are many independent online radio stations.
Is it easy to find places to play there in the USA?
Ezra: I think there are a lot of people that want to see bands like us but when we go to a small town we never know how many people will come to the show so it’s funny.
Charlotte: It’s harder than here in Italy.
Please can you tell me something about your future plans?
Ezra: Our main future plan is to finish the LP and after that we’ll start a tour in the USA and we’ll want to come back here because we’re having a good time here.
Zu: I hope for a tour in Mexico and South America.
Charlotte: Italy is very awesome so we want to come back here.
Dav: Yeah, it’s always a pleasure to play here, I played here a couple of times in the past with another band. I love this place.
