MISSIO – Intervista su “I am high” a Matthew Brue.

Buongiorno e piacere di avervi sulle pagine di Tuttorock. Volete iniziare raccontandoci come nasce Missio? Come vi siete conosciuti e come avete deciso di dare vista a questo progetto?
Grazie per averci intervistato! Missio era un progetto creato nel 2015 da me (Matthew) con pochissima voglia di raggiungere fama o successo a lungo termine. Entrambi abbiamo fatto parte di band precedenti cercando di “inseguire il sogno” di scrivere una hit e col tempo quella mentalità è diventata estenuante. Inizialmente avevo incontrato David tramite un nostro amico comune della band precedente e ho subito capito che era qualcuno che avrebbe potuto aiutarmi a produrre il mio prossimo progetto e aiutarmi a diventare un artista migliore. Abbiamo iniziato a lavorare insieme da quel momento e il resto è storia. La motivazione del cuore e dello spirito a non desiderare vera fama e successo è ciò che ha permesso alle canzoni di parlare da sole e prima che ce ne rendessimo conto, persone ovunque si sono rivolte alla nostra band. Non capisco l’universo, ma sono grato per come ha funzionato in questa situazione.

Quali sono stati i vostri primi ascolti musicali da giovani?
Abbiamo ascoltato praticamente tutto e siamo stati ispirati dalla maggior parte di questi artisti! Alcuni dei principali sono Sigur Ros, Death Cab For Cutie, Smashing Pumpkins, Led Zeppelin, JobForACowboy, MuteMath, System of a Down, Incubus, Deftones, Blink 182, ecc. 

Avete avuto subito un successo incredibile con lo streaming, come vedete la sparizione dei supporti fisici e l’avanzare dello streaming?
La mia opinione personale è che finché le persone continuano ad apprezzare l’arte, a comprenderne il valore e ad ascoltare musica, questo è davvero ciò che mi interessa. Detto questo, gli artisti devono iniziare a essere pagati di più dallo streaming se l’ascoltatore medio continua a voler ottenere buona musica dai propri artisti preferiti. Lo streaming per noi è qualcosa di cui siamo molto grati; tuttavia, diventa sempre più difficile pagare le bollette perché ai servizi di streaming non importa. A questo proposito, mi manca l’acquisto di unità fisiche che supporti la continuazione dell’artista nel fare arte. 

I am hight come è nato? A cosa vi siete ispirati? All’ascolto ho trovato tante anime diverse, un brano hit-radio come Good Vibrations, poi rap, ma anche pop e ballate.
Un giorno ci siamo incontrati entrambi e ci siamo resi conto che stavamo scrivendo demo e idee per canzoni in modo indipendente. Abbiamo suonato un totale di oltre 30 canzoni e ci siamo resi conto che avevamo alcune canzoni davvero fantastiche ma quasi troppe per un solo album. Dopo aver riflettuto su alcune idee su come pubblicare tutte queste canzoni, siamo arrivati alla creazione di più EP con stili e stati d’animo diversi per riflettere cosa significa essere umani in questa vita. Sperimentare una serie di emozioni e risposte diverse, una di queste è “I am high”. Tutti corriamo verso cose che ci fanno sentire “sballati” e quelle cose non devono sempre essere sostanze, anche se spesso lo sono. 

Ho trovato decisamente particolare Papi Chulo, siete d’accordo? Come è nata?
Quell’attacco principale del basso, con cui inizia la canzone è nato quasi per caso. La parte originale in realtà ha una progressione completamente diversa, ma alla fine ho usato uno strano plugin FX che ha cambiato la progressione e l’ha trasformata in quell’hook principale. Quando l’ho sentito ho capito che era FANTASTICO! Ho portato l’idea originale a David e abbiamo iniziato a lavorarci ad Austin, in Texas, per poi completarla a Città del Messico, in Messico. Potresti sentire un poco di influenze latine: provengono tutte dal tempo che trascorriamo a Città del Messico. 

Se dovessi indicare un vostro pezzo preferito nella tracklist?
Il mio preferito in questo E.P. è “Big Stacks”, penso che quella canzone sia incredibilmente unica e mi dia un senso di fiducia che a volte mi manca nella mia vita. Adoro il modo in cui certe canzoni hanno il potere di cambiare la mentalità di una persona, nel bene o nel male. 

Al momento cosa state ascoltando? Avete qualche cosa di interessante da consigliare, a parte la vostra musica?
Dai un’occhiata a “PFTD” di Halogenix, “Do You Feel It” di Johnny Yukon e “Great Taste” di Miso Extra: questi sono alcuni artisti che ho ascoltato ultimamente. Ovviamente continuate ad ascoltare MISSIO! <3 

Progetti futuri? Andrete in tour per suonare il disco dal divo?
Rilasceremo un totale di 5 EP che culmineranno nel nostro quinto album completo. Tanta, tantissima nuova musica in arrivo! L’uscita di questo album sarà seguita da un tour globale nel 2024 e non vediamo l’ora di riunirci con i nostri fan!

Good morning and pleasure to have you on the pages of Tuttorock. Would you like to start by telling us how Missio was born? How did you meet and how did you decide to start this project?
Thanks for interviewing us! Missio was a project created in 2015 by me (Matthew) with very little desire to achieve long term fame or success. Both of us had been in previous bands trying to “chase the dream” of writing a hit and over time that mentality became exhausting.  I had initially met David through a mutual friend of ours for that previous band and I instantly knew he was someone that could help me produce my next project and help me become a better artist. We began working with eachother after that moment and the rest is history. The motivation of heart and spirit not desiring true fame and success is what allowed the songs to speak for themselves & before we knew it, people everywhere were reaching out about our band. I don’t understand the universe but i’m grateful for how it worked in this situation. 

What were your first musical listenings when you were young?
We have listened to pretty much everything & inspired by most! Some of the main ones are Sigur Ros, Death Cab For Cutie, Smashing Pumpkins, Led Zeppelin, JobForACowboy, MuteMath, System of a Down, Incubus, Deftones, Blink 182, etc. 

You’ve had incredible success with streaming right away, how do you see the physical media disappearing and streaming advancing?
My personal opinion is that as long as people are still enjoying art, understanding its value, and continuing to listen to music that’s really what I care about. That being said, artists need to start being paid more from streaming if the average listener continues to want to get good music from their favorite artists. Streaming for us is something we are very grateful for however, it gets harder and harder to pay our bills because the streaming services don’t care. In that regard, I miss the purchasing of physical units that supports the artists continuation of making art. 

I am high how was born? What inspired you? Listening to it, I found many different souls, a radio hit song like Good Vibrations, then rap, but also pop and ballads.
We had both met up one day and realized we had been indepdently writing demo’s and song ideas. We played through a collective 30+ songs and realized we had some really great songs but almost too many for just one album. After thinking through a few ideas of how to release all of these songs we landed on creating multiple EP’s with different style/moods to reflect what it means to be human in this life. To experience an array of different emotions and responses, one of those being ‘I Am High.’ We all run to things that make us feel “high” and those things don’t always have to be substances even though frequently they are. 

I found Papi Chulo very particular, do you agree? How was it born?
That main bass hook that starts the song was a bit of an accident. The original part is actually completely different progression, but I ended up using a weird FX plugin that switched the progression up and turned it into that main hook. When I heard it I knew it was AWESOME! I brought that original idea to David and we began working on it in Austin, TX & later finishing it in Mexico City, Mexico. You may hear a bit of latin influences – those all come from our time we spend in Mexico City.  

If you had to indicate your favorite piece in the tracklist?
My personal favorite on this E.P. is ‘Big Stacks’ – I think that song is incredibly unique and gives me a sense of confidence that I sometimes lack in my own life. I love how certain songs have the power to switch a persons mindset, either good or bad. 

What are you currently listening to? Do you have anything interesting to recommend, apart from your music?
Check-out ‘PFTD’ by Halogenix, ‘Do You Feel It’ by Johnny Yukon, & ‘Great Taste’ by Miso Extra – Those are some artists i’ve been listening to lately. Obviously keep listening to MISSIO! <3 

Future projects? Will you go on tour to play live on stage?
We will be releasing a total of 5 E.P’s that culminate into our 5th Full Length Album. Lots & lots of new music coming y’alls way! This album release will be followed by a global tour in 2024 & we can’t wait to reunite with our fans!
