THE PAPER KITES – Roses

Prodotto da Bentley e Tom Iansek (#1 Dads, Big Scary), ‘Roses’ raggiunge l’importante obiettivo del frontman della band di duettare con artisti da ogni parte del mondo, tra cui cui Julia Stone, Lucy Rose, Nadia Reid, Maro, Aoife O’Donnovan, Rosie Carney, Ainslie Wills, Amanda Bergman, Lydia Cole, Gena Rose Bruce. In arrivo il 12 marzo su etichetta Nettwerk/Bertus, ‘Roses’ è il quinto album di The Paper Kites, una dichiarazione di sincerità e di autentico songwriting, una collezione di collaborazioni della band australiana con artisti noti nella scena musicale mondiale. Il primo singolo pubblicato, ‘Without Your Love’, con il feat. di Julia Stone, mostra le già note abilità di The Paper Kites nel coniugare il songwriting con armonie meravigliose, creando ballad che si muovono tra il folk-pop d’avanguardia ed un rock più sentimentale. La collaborazione con Julia Stone – nota per essere la metà al femminile di Angus & Julia Stone – corona il sogno del frontman Sam Bentley: “I grew up listening to Julia’s music, and some of her work was pivotal in turning me down the road I went. So, to approach her and have her love that song and want to sing on it was an amazing full-circle moment – she’s such an important figure of the folk revival in Australia, and I don’t think we would be a band without them leading the way. It was a real honor to work with her.”.

Sin dal loro esordio nel 2010 con l’ep ‘Woodland’, The Paper Kites si sono immediatamente fatti riconoscere per il loro folk-rock alternativo, conquistando in breve tempo numerosi fan, una certificazione d’oro e di platino in Italia, Nuova Zelanda, Paesi Bassi, USA, Canada ed Australia con il singolo ‘Bloom’. Con questo ‘Roses’ si mantengono dentro i confini di un sound toccante e intimistico, che spazia da più frizzante opening di Walk above the city, alle voci sognanti di Aoife O’Donovan e Lydia Cole che appaiono nei brani seguenti. Il disco prosegue senza particolari sussulti su un trend fin troppo appiattito, anche se di qualità, con una nota di merito per la splendida Without your love con la bravissima Julia Stone.

Siamo di fronte a un buon disco da ascoltare in sottofondo, intimistico e toccante, che forse pecca in personalità e mordente, ma che si lascia ascoltare volentieri.
