THE FRANKLIN ELECTRIC – Intervista al cantante e songwriter Jon Matte

The Franklin Electric 1

Ho intervistato Jon Matte, cantante e autore dei brani della band indie folk canadese The Franklin Electric, in occasione del nuovo EP “In Your Heart”, pubblicato il 21 febbraio sotto l’etichetta Nettwerk Music Group. Nominati ai Juno Awards 2018 nella categoria “Gruppo rivelazione dell’anno”, The Franklin Electric hanno collezionato oltre 400 concerti a cominciare dal loro debutto nel 2014, aprendo i tour mondiali di artisti come Mumford & Sons, Ben Howard, Edward Shape e City and Color.

Ciao ragazzi, benvenuti sulle pagine di Tuttorock, come va in generale?
Ciao e grazie!

In Canada siamo molto apprezzati, credo.

Dovrei dirti troppi nomi, ma ti nomino artisti come Ben Howard, Half Moon Run, Leonard Cohen, Ryx, Sam Fender, Amber Run, Gregory Alan Isakov…

Grazie

** ENGLISH VERSION **

I interviewed Jon Matte, singer and songwriter of the Canadian indie folk band The Franklin Electric, on the occasion of the new EP “In Your Heart” released on February 21 under Nettwerk Music Group label. Nominated for the 2018 Juno Awards in the ‘Breakthrough Group of the Year’ category, The Franklin Electric have collected over 400 concerts since their debut in 2014, opening tours around the world of Mumford & Sons, Ben Howard, Edward Shape and City and Color.

Hi guys, welcome on the pages of Tuttorock, how’s it going in general?
Hello and thank you! We are currently in a van in a snowstorm in Ontario Canada on our way to a show, so we are good but driving cautiously!

I had the pleasure of listening to “In your Heart”, your new EP, I found it wonderful, how did the six songs come about and how does your songs usually come about?
Most songs come about through some sort of improvisation where I tend to stumble on an idea and then record that as a starting point. I’ll then listen back to it and work it out. I tend to write alone and just record ideas until one stands out to me.

“In your Heart” comes out a few months after the previous EP, “In your Head”, will you continue in this way or are you planning a new LP in the near future?
We are planning a follow up with some intimate acoustic versions of some of the songs that are on both EPs “In your head” & “In your heart”.

“Trouble” is one of the best songs I’ve heard in recent years and there is no one of your songs that I don’t like. Are you aware of your enormous talent? Don’t you feel a little underestimated?
Wow thanks so much that’s a huge compliment ! At times we feel like some stuff has gone through the cracks a bit unnoticed, however it’s really ok as I am grateful for what we have as it’s been axing to see these songs find a place in the world.

Your sound seems very European but you come from Montreal, what do those who work in music in Canada think of you?
In Canada we are well appreciated I think. We really have a great support across the province of Quebec and Canada along with certain places in Europe.

What would you like from the world of music?
Depends if you are speaking about success or just the art but i would say to continue to have an impact on people all over the world with our music is pretty much the main goal. After that, I’d like to see this thing develop more in places we haven’t been much including certain parts of Europe.

Your melodies and your videos are very melancholy, is it your usual mood?
I’m a very self-reflective person but I’m not sure if it’s my usual mood. It translates through my songs so I guess it’s a big part of me.

For those who don’t know you yet, would you like to tell me which artists have most influenced your way of making music?
That’s a tough question. I’d say there’s too many too name but artists from Ben Howard to Half Moon Run to Leonard Cohen, Ryx, Sam Fender,  Amber Run, Gregory Alan Isakov…

Are you planning a tour? And when will you come to Italy?
We are planning some European dates now for the spring & fall and would love to play Italy so we shall see !!

Thank you very much for this interview, do you want to say something to your Italian fans?
We are truly grateful for all the support we’ve seen this far in Italy, we hope to see you all soon!! Thank you
