STORIES – THE ROLLING STONES e la storia di “SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL”

Da una parte c’è uno dei gruppi rock’n’roll più famosi di sempre, la lingua  più celebre di tutti i tempi che si è allungata ovunque attraverso paesi, collaborazioni e generi, dall’altra uno dei romanzi capisaldi della letteratura russa e mondiale, una storia fantastica e struggente usata come invettiva nei confronti dell’ignorante censuratore regime comunista di inizio ‘900, da una parte i Rolling Stones con celebre brano Sympathy for the Devil dall’altra Michael Bulgakov con Il Maestro e Margherita, il resto è storia. Il brano in questione è la traccia di Mick Jagger e compagni che apre l’album Beggars Banquet del 1968, uno dei classici del gruppo, inizialmente intitolata “The Devil is my Name” fu incisa tra l’8 e il 10 giugno 1968 negli Olympic Studios, la traccia parte come brano folk evolvendosi nel corso della durata fino a diventare una samba indiavolato.

Sul finire degli anni sessanta finalmente dopo svariate correzioni per via della censura e ritocchi vide la luce, postumo, il famigerato Il Maestro e Margherita, l’opus magnum di Michael Bulgakov. Tra gli innumerevoli lettori di questo manoscritto ci fu anche Mick Jagger che ricevette in dono una copia del libro dall’allora compagnia Marianne Faithfull, da questa lettura Jagger rimase folgorato, illuminato, un innamoramento letterario che si traduce nel brano in questione, metafora dell’eterno rapporto tra bene e male. L’inizio della celeberrima canzone è una citazione del romanzo, difatti se confrontiamo l’incipit di entrambi notiamo notevole somiglianza. Nel romanzo di Bulgakov il Diavolo giunge a Mosca sotto le vesti di un prestigiatore che con trovate surreali e personaggi assurdi si diverte a mettere nei guai personaggi altolocati dell’ambiente culturale e finanziario, ed è lo stesso di cui cantano i Rolling Stones in Sympathy for the Devil, lo stesso Jagger si immedesimò così tanto nella parte al punto di indossare un particolare costume nei concerti per accompagnare il pezzo, presto il brano venne decisamente osteggiato dalla chiesa associando il rock a movimenti satanisti, mentre il gruppo guadagnava sempre più popolarità, ottime recensioni e successo.
