LALU – Paint The Sky
Vivien Lalu è un compositore, produttore e tastierista francese e per Frontiers Records esce “Paint The Sky”, un album molto affascinante di progressive rock vicino agli Yes e ad aiutarlo una serie di grandi ospiti come Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater), Steve Walsh (Kansas), Jens Johansson (Yngwie J. Malmsteen’s Rising Force/Stratovarius), i nostri Simone Mularoni (DGM), Marco Sfogli (PFM), Alessandro Del Vecchio (Edge Of Forever e tantissimi altri), Gary Wehrkamp (Shadow Gallery) e Simon Phillips (Toto/Who). Alla voce c’è Damian Wilson già nei Threshold e recentemente negli Arena e Joop Wolters alla chitarra e al basso. “Reset To Preset” è un brano splendido che ricorda molto da vicino gli Yes del periodo “Drama” e la voce di Damian Wilson è perfetta per queste sonorità, progressive rock anche articolato e “Won’t Rest Until The Heat Of The Earth Burns The Soles Of Our Feet Down To The Bone”, dal titolo lunghissimo, è invece un brano breve e più sul progressive metal che ricorda i Threshold, anche per la presenza di Wilson. In “Emotionalised” c’è un ritorno al progressive rock più classico e “Painted The Sky”, la title track, è un brano strepitoso, ci sono sempre gli Yes all’orizzonte e il brano è molto articolato, il drum work, opera di Jelly Cardarelli è molto articolato e fantasioso, sorretto anche dall’ottimo lavoro di basso di Tony Fanklin, qui come ospite e altre presenze illustri sono gli interventi vocali di Steve Walsh e la presenza di Jens Johansson alle tastiere.
Ogni brano è degno di menzione, come “Witness To The World” e le sue atmosfere malinconiche e con un ottimo guitar solo di Joop Wolters, come “Lost In Conversation”, dove alle tastiere a dare manforte a Vivien Lalu troviamo nuovamente Jens Johansson e come “Standing At The Gates Of Hell”, dove c’è anche un po’ di jazz rock e fusion, partiture musicali fantastiche! Altri grandi ospiti in “The Chosen Ones”, Jordan Rudes alle tastiere e Simone Mularoni alla chitarra, brano eccellente ed arricchito da momenti musicali di grande spessore artistico e professionale e “Sweet Asylum”, breve strumentale per sola chitarra acustica che apre le porte a “We Are Strong”, dove tornano nel sound prepotentemente gli Yes, quelli di “Close To The Edge” stavolta, progressive rock d’altri tempi e da incorniciare è la performance vocale di Damian Wilson. In chiusura “All Of The Lights”, breve brano dove Wilson continua ad incantare con la sua voce dalla timbrica molto particolare, accompagnato dalle note di un pianoforte e c’è nuovamente “Paint The Sky”, ma alla batteria c’è stavolta Simon Phillips e è in versione strumentale. Un piccolo gioiellino prog e devo dire la verità, questo “Paint The Sky” mi ha sorpreso, ma in senso positivo.
