Quando i più remoti viaggi della mente prendono forma e vengono inglobati in mondi che rappresentano le proprie espressioni interne ed esterne, solitamente si parla di realtà contrapposte, in dualismi continui: Utopia e Distopia, Cielo e Terra, Olimpo e Inferi. Questo è il concetto che Lily Kershaw ha voluto ricreare lungo undici tracce, per un totale di trentasei minuti: e così nasce il nuovo album in studio “Arcadia”, in arrivo il 15 novembre per Nettwerk. Si tratta del lavoro più intimo della cantante e songwriter americana, che gioca coi suoni analogici dell’organo, del clavicembalo e della chitarra imprimendo loro una forza cinematica. Il risultato è il tappeto ideale per far risaltare la sua voce, feroce e poetica al tempo stesso. per quanto il concetto dietro la realizzazione di “Arcadia” abbia echi epici, in realtà quella che Kershaw racconta è una storia di accettazione, di sé e dei misteri dell’Universo.
“At the same time that I’m existing in existential crisis there’s also this part of me that is fully in acceptance of the reality of being alive and loves it. That acceptance also allowed me to be more intimate. Whether people realize it or not, I feel like I’m revealing a lot.”
Ma la strada verso l’accettazione è lastricata di battaglie. Lily Kershaw si definisce una “compulsive songwriter”: fa musica da quando era giovanissima. Costantemente in studio di registrazione, Lily Kershaw negli ultimi sei anni ha pubblicato un disco, un EP e una sfilza di singoli, fra cui la strepitosa hit “As it Seems.” E più compone e più registra, più rafforza la propria fiducia in se stessa.
“I think initially when I was making music, I would go into the room and believe that whoever I was with knew better than me. I’ve been writing music for so long and I’ve been recording music since I was seventeen-years-old and I’m twenty eight — that’s a lot of years. I’ve learned I need to trust my gut when I’m on to something.”
Questo processo intuitivo è stato fondamentale nella realizzazione di “Arcadia”. Il disco vede la collaborazione del producer e artista artist Ben Cooper, con il quale Lily Kershaw sente di avere in comune lo stesso tipo di creatività: “As we walked into the studio, I realized that to work with him and to do it well would mean that the most important thing is that I be myself.”
L’idea stessa di fare un nuovo disco, racconta l’artista, le è stata suggerita da una voce interiore:
“At the beginning of the year, I got obsessed with the word Arcadia. It was looping in my brain, and as I was driving one day, it was just too loud. So I yelled out, ‘You want me to move to Arcadia!?’ And then I became really calm and some part of my brain said, ‘no it’s a record. Go make a record called Arcadia.”
Man mano che il concetto di Arcadia si sviluppava lungo il disco, Lily ha affiancato a esso un mondo contrapposto, che viene ben descritto nella canzone “Myth of New York”. Il mortale verso l’immortale. Due concetti che sembrano dividere l’album in due metà.
“If the first half had imagery, it would be a lush idealistic place and the second half of the record would exist somewhere on the edges of a dystopic city that has fallen.”
In realtà la metafora più simile è un serpente che si morde la coda (come Ouroboros), considerando che la prima e l’ultima nota del disco sono le stesse: un loop infinito. Nonostante suoni tutto molto esoterico, Lily Kershaw racconta momenti di vita reale in termini assolutamente comprensibili e condivisibili, che toccano temi con l’amore, la sofferenza e la paura.
