WOLFCHANT – L’epic pagan metal band tedesca parla del nuovo album
In occasione dell’uscita del settimo album in studio “Omega : Bestia”, avvenuta lo scorso 9 aprile su etichetta Reaper Entertainment, ho avuto il piacere di intervistare la band epic pagan metal tedesca Wolfchant.
Ciao ragazzi, benvenuti su Tuttorock, come state?
Ciao. Stiamo bene, grazie.
“OMEGA: BESTIA”, il vostro nuovo album, è uscito quasi un mese fa, che riscontri state avendo?
Per lo più straordinariamente buoni. Le persone sembrano apprezzare le canzoni e riconoscono i nostri progressi dopo Bloodwinter. Alcune persone al di fuori della Germania dicono semplicemente che preferirebbero avere più canzoni in inglese, ma quelle tedesche accolgono nella maniera migliore la nostra modalità di esprimerci in queste canzoni. Finora siamo molto soddisfatti del feedback.
Quando avete scritto le nove canzoni?
Durante un periodo lungo dalla metà del 2019. C’erano molte idee dato che abbiamo avuto una pausa più lunga rispetto a quanto avvenuto in precedenza.
Avete scritto altre canzoni che non hanno trovato spazio in questo album?
Nell’album principale ci sono le 9 canzoni. Nel secondo disco della versione digitale troverai altre 5 canzoni in più. Nella confezione deluxe altre 5 nuove versioni e cover.
Come nasce di solito una canzone dei Wolfchant?
Di solito c’è un’idea di canzone approssimativa che parte da uno dei nostri chitarristi Skaahl o Seehb e vengono poi condivisi alcuni demo. Se il demo piace a tutti, iniziamo a lavorarci su e noi cantanti scriviamo i testi e registriamo le parti vocali. Successivamente decidiamo quale canzone sarà inserita nell’album.
Con due cantanti, chi decide come dividere le linee vocali?
Non c’è una vera regola, ma chi scrive i testi propone come condividere le linee. Durante le registrazioni, poi, di solito vediamo se la linea si adatta bene o se dobbiamo modificarla in qualche modo.
Come siete riusciti a registrare l’album con tutte le restrizioni dovute alla pandemia?
Poiché oggigiorno ci sono molti strumenti per scambiare idee di canzoni e dati musicali attraverso il web, la scrittura delle canzoni è stata fatta da tutti in maniera solitaria. Anche durante le registrazioni non ci siamo incontrati tutti insieme a causa delle restrizioni. È stato un po’ più complicato per i video, ma a seconda della situazione che c’era in quel momento siamo riusciti ad agire in maniera appropriata.
Per chi non vi conosce, come vi siete incontrati e quando avete pensato di formare i Wolfchant?
La band si è formata nel 2003. A quel tempo tutti i membri originali vivevano nella Bassa Baviera, vicino a un parco nazionale con i lupi che cantavano. Questo ambiente ha dato la giusta atmosfera per la nostra musica dalle radici pagane. Al giorno d’oggi siamo sparsi più o meno in tutta la Germania.
Siete soddisfatti di come sono andate le cose per voi nel mondo della musica?
Ci concentriamo sulla nostra musica e sulle grandi esperienze che abbiamo avuto negli anni. Il fattore divertimento è molto importante e abbiamo sempre voluto divertirci durante i festival e i concerti. A parte questo, non ci guardiamo alle spalle e speriamo che tutto questo ritorni dopo la fine della pandemia.
C’è un concerto che ricordate più degli altri?
Di solito ci godiamo ogni spettacolo. Abbiamo suonato in molti festival e abbiamo incontrato molti altri musicisti e tante persone tra il pubblico. È difficile sceglierne uno, ma spettacoli come 70000t of Metal ovviamente rimarranno nella nostra mente per molto tempo.
A proposito di concerti, state pensando di organizzare un tour?
Sì, sicuramente avremo diverse date in autunno e cerchiamo ulteriori possibilità nel 2022. Speriamo che tutto vada a buon fine.

On the occasion of the release of the seventh studio album “Omega: Bestia”, which took place on April 9th on the Reaper Entertainment label, I had the pleasure of interviewing German epic-pagan metallers Wolfchant.
Hi guys, welcome to Tuttorock, how are you?
Hi there. We are fine, thank you.
“OMEGA: BESTIA”, your new album, was released almost a month ago, what feedback did you get?
Well, mostly overwhelmingly good feedback. The people seem to like the songs and they recognize the progress since Bloodwinter. Some international folks just mention they would prefer to get more songs in English, but the German ones reflect in the best way how we wanted to express ourselves in these songs. We are very happy with the feedback so far.
When did you write the nine songs?
It was during a long period since mid of 2019. There were plenty of ideas as we’ve had a longer break before.
Did you write any other songs that didn’t find space on this album?
On the main album there are the 9 songs. On the second disc of the digi version you’ll find another 5 songs more. In the deluxe box another 5 re-recordings and cover songs.
How does a Wolfchant song usually come about?
Usually there is a rough song idea from one of our guitarists Skaahl and Seehb and some demos are shared. If we all like it we start to work it out and we as singers write the lyrics and record the vocals on the demos. Later we decide which song will make it on the album.
You have two singers, who decides how to split the vocal lines?
There’s no real rule to it but the one who wrote the lyrics makes a proposal how to share the lines. During the recordings then we usually see if it fits well, or if we need to change it in some way.
How did you manage to record the album with all the restrictions due to the pandemic?
Well, as there are nowadays many tools to exchange song ideas and music data through the web the songwriting was done by everybody alone. Also during the recordings we did not meet all together because of the restrictions. It was a bit more complicated for the videos, but depending on the actual situation right at that time we managed to get it done in an appropriate way.
For those who don’t know you, how did you meet and when did you think about forming Wolfchant?
The band was formed in 2003. At that time all the original members lived close together in lower Bavaria close to a national park with chanting wolves. This environment gave the right atmosphere for our pagan rooted music. Nowadays we are spread more or less all over Germany.
Are you satisfied with how things have gone so far for you in the world of music?
We focus on our music and the great experiences we had over the years. The fun factor is very important and we always wanted to have good times on the festivals and shows. Beside this we don’t look back and hope that this all will come back after the pandemic.
Is there a concert that you remember more than the others?
We usually enjoy every show. We’ve played on many festivals and have met many fellow musicians and great people in the audiences. It’s difficult to pick one out but shows like 70000t of Metal of course stay in our minds for long time.
Speaking of concerts, are you thinking about planning a tour?
Yes for sure we have several dates in autumn and we look for further possibilities in 2022. Let’s hope that it all will work out.
