THE HARLEM SPIRIT OF GOSPEL CHOIR – Intervista a Anthony Morgan 2019

Ciao Anthony, benvenuto sulle pagine di Tuttorock, è un piacere per me intervistarti, prima di tutto come stai in generale?
Grazie per avermi scelto per l’intervista e mi sento in maniera meravigliosa per essere stato scelto per cantare nella tua città.

Cosa significa per te la musica gospel?
La musica gospel è il sentimento interiore della tua anima, è il linguaggio universale che tutti comprendono attraverso la musica.

E cosa significa per te portare il gospel in giro per il mondo?
È un onore portare la musica gospel in tutto il mondo, è come essere un ambasciatore di pace e amore per tutti, specialmente per le persone che hanno amore per Dio.

La vostra musica è sempre associata alla religione, ma ci sono molti non credenti che vengono a vedere i vostrii spettacoli, vorresti dire qualcosa a loro?
Sì, è vero, sono andato in alcuni paesi di fede musulmana e a loro piace la nostra scelta musicale, perché la base principale della nostra musica è l’amore e tutti vogliono essere amati.

Avete collaborato con molti artisti, tra cui Ray Charles, Steve Wonder, Aretha Franklin, c’è qualcuno nella scena musicale attuale con cui vorresti collaborare?
In collaborazione con i membri del mio coro sì, abbiamo cantato con alcuni di questi grandi artisti e molti altri. Il mio batterista Derick McElveen Jr sta attualmente suonando per 50 Cent, il rapper. Mi piacerebbe collaborare con Lionel Richie, anocra con Gladys Knight e Donald Lawrence. Ho frequentato un corso di musica e arte svolto da Edwin Hawkins che è un grande insegnante e autore di canzoni.

Cantate canzoni esistenti ma ne scrivete anche di nuove, le scrivi tu stesso?
Scrivere canzoni non è il mio punto di forza, l’ho fatto due anni fa ed è andato bene, ho appena smesso di cantarle. Quest’anno ho portato il vincitore del McDonald’s Gospel Festival, con oltre 90000 cantanti in competizione, J1 Robinson. Ha scritto due canzoni durante questo tour e ne eseguiremo una nel nostro spettacolo chiamato “Yet will”.

Come nasce una tua canzone?
Ho una grande squadra di musicisti che comprende produttori, scrittori e artisti stessi, la parte migliore di loro è che amano il Signore.

Il mondo ha vari problemi, pensi che la musica possa aiutare ad aprire le menti delle persone per migliorare la situazione?
Sì, penso che la musica possa aprire la mente delle persone per risolvere molti problemi.

Sarete accompagnati da una band o il vostro spettacolo a Bologna sarà solo un concerto vocale?
Ho portato tre musicisti di grande talento ovvero un batterista, un pianista e un bassista e il mio direttore musicale, il suo nome è Phil Teatime Jones. Hanno viaggiato con me negli ultimi anni.

Grazie mille, vuoi dire qualcosa a chi verrà a vedervi al Teatro delle Celebrazioni di Bologna il prossimo 19 dicembre?
Sì, vorrei dire di venire con il cuore aperto e pronto per trascorrere un meraviglioso momento di gospel. Siamo preparati anche ad avere partecipazione da parte del pubblico.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Anthony Morgan, leader of the gospel choir “The Harlem Spirit of Gospel”, on occasion of the concert at the Teatro delle Celebrazioni in Bologna on December 19th.

Hello Anthony, welcome on the pages of Tuttorock, it’s a pleasure for me to interview you, first of all how are you in general?
Thank you for choosing me for a interview and I feel wonderful being chosen to sing in your city.

What does gospel music mean to you?
Gospel music is the inner feelings of your soul it’s the universal language that everyone understands through music.

And what does it mean for you to bring the gospel around the world?
It’s an honour to bring gospel music around the world it’s like being an ambassador of peace and love for all especially people who have love for God.

Your music is always associated with religion, but there are many non-believers who come to see your shows, would you like to say something to them?
Yes this is very true I have gone to some countries of Muslim faith and they do like my choice of music it’s because the main base of my music is love and everyone wants to be loved.

You have collaborated with many artists, including Ray Charles, Steve Wonder, Aretha Franklin, is there anyone in the current music scene you would like to collaborate with?
In Collaboration with my choir members yes we have sang with some of these great artist and many more. My drummer Derick McElveen Jr is currently playing for 50 Cent the rapper / artist. I would like to collaborate with Lionel Richie, again with Gladys Knight and and Donald Lawrence. I attended a music and art class he taught with the Edwin Hawkins music and art seminar he is a great teacher and song writer.

You sing existing songs but you also write new ones, are you writing them yourself?
Writing songs is not my strong point I did right one two years ago and it went well I just stopped performing it. This year I brought the winner of the McDonald’s Gospel Festival over 90000 singers competed and I brought the winner his name is J1 Robinson. He wrote two songs while on this tour and we will perform one of them at your show called “Yet will”.

Where does your song come from?
I have a great team of musicians who are producers writers and performers themselves the best part about them it is they love the Lord.

The world has various problems, do you think music can help open people’s minds to improve the situation?
Yes I do think that music can open people’s mind to solve many problems.

Will you be accompanied by a band or will your show only be a vocal concert in Bologna?
I brought  three very talented musicians drummer, pianist and bass player and my music director, his name is Phil Teatime Jones. They have travelled with me for the past several years.

Thank you very much, do you want to say something to those who come to see you at the Teatro delle Celebrazioni in Bologna next December 19th?
Yes I would like to say come with an open heart and ready to have a wonderful gospel time. Also be prepared to have audience participation.
