TAILGUNNER – Intervista su Midnight Blitz

In occasione dell’uscita del loro nuovo album “MIDNIGHT BLITZ” ho intervistato la band TAILGUNNER.

Il titolo Midnight Blitz richiama un immaginario bellico molto forte. Qual è il suo significato e come si lega ai contenuti del disco?
In realtà è una metafora della band stessa. Mi è sempre piaciuto quando le band scrivono canzoni su se stesse, come “Rock N’ Roll Outlaw” dei Rose Tattoo; “Midnight Blitz” parte dallo stesso concetto. Parla di noi come band e dell’essere fan dell’heavy metal nel 2026. 

In che modo questo album si distingue dal vostro debutto, sia a livello compositivo che sonoro?
Il nostro album di debutto è stato scritto mentre la band era ancora in fase di formazione e registrato più di un anno prima che suonassimo dal vivo per la prima volta. Questa volta, invece, abbiamo girato il Paese tenendo oltre 100 concerti e condividendo il palco con nomi leggendari; quindi, tutto ciò che abbiamo imparato si ritrova nel nuovo album. 

Qual è stato il punto di partenza creativo di Midnight Blitz?
Non c’è stato un unico punto di partenza, ma solo il desiderio di andare avanti migliorando tutto ciò che avevamo fatto nel nostro esordio.

Esiste un concept o un filo tematico che unisce i brani?
In questo album ricorre il tema della morte, della natura effimera della vita, del confrontarsi con la propria mortalità e del viaggio verso l’ignoto dell’aldilà. 

Il vostro stile si colloca nell’ambito dell’heavy metal classico. Quali sono state le principali influenze per questo nuovo lavoro?
Tutti i grandi nomi, ma anche gruppi meno conosciuti. Maiden, Priest, Helloween, Megadeth, Dio, Mercyful Fate, Saxon, Demon, Grim Reaper… ce ne sono tantissimi! 

Avete modificato il vostro approccio al songwriting rispetto al passato?
No, ma in questo album c’è sicuramente l’intenzione e il desiderio di sfondare le porte del mondo del metal mainstream, cosa che sta cominciando ad accadere per noi, ed è fantastico vederlo. Qualcuno deve portare avanti la bandiera dell’heavy metal. 

Come bilanciate elementi melodici e aggressivi all’interno delle vostre composizioni?
La melodia è fondamentale. Senza ritornelli accattivanti non hai assolutamente nulla. Ci sono tantissime band con un ottimo sound, ma le loro canzoni ti scivolano addosso. Se qualcosa non è memorabile o orecchiabile, non finisce nei nostri album. Ogni canzone deve reggersi da sola, ma si possono avere brani estremamente orecchiabili che sono anche aggressivissimi. Prendo ad esempio band come i Bathory o i Venom: sono ancora piene zeppe di ritornelli memorabili. 

C’è un brano che considerate particolarmente rappresentativo della band in questa fase della carriera?
«Midnight Blitz»! Deve essere proprio quella: non a caso è la traccia che dà il titolo all’album e racchiude in sé tutto ciò che questo disco rappresenta. 

I testi fanno largo uso di immagini legate al conflitto e all’eroismo. Si tratta di riferimenti storici o di una simbologia più astratta?
Sono più simboliche. Quando cantiamo di argomenti come la guerra, ci concentriamo soprattutto sul lato umano della questione, dal punto di vista emotivo. Le interpretazioni letterali le lasciamo ai Sabaton, ahah! 

Qual è il ruolo della narrazione nei vostri brani?
Non credo che le canzoni debbano seguire uno schema lineare, non è necessario che raccontino una storia conclusiva: questo mi interessa raramente. È più importante trasmettere emozioni, idee o trasportare l’ascoltatore in un determinato mondo. 

C’è una canzone che ha per voi un valore più personale rispetto alle altre?
«Eye of the Storm» è la canzone più personale che abbia mai scritto, dedicata a una persona che amo moltissimo. Non mi era mai successo prima, e forse non succederà mai più. 

Com’è stato il processo di registrazione e produzione dell’album?
È stato fantastico! Ovviamente, in questo album abbiamo collaborato con KK Downing, quindi le sessioni sono state intense, ma nel complesso è stato un processo semplice. L’album è stato registrato nell’arco di sei mesi, entrando e uscendo dallo studio in modo da poterci familiarizzare con il materiale mentre lo registravamo. 

Avete affrontato difficoltà specifiche durante le sessioni in studio?
È proprio il nostro perfezionismo. Siamo estremamente severi gli uni con gli altri quando si tratta di standard; quindi, ci facciamo impazzire a vicenda ripetendo le cose centinaia di volte finché non sono perfette. 

In quale momento avete capito che il disco era completo?
Si può sempre fare di più, lavorare ancora su qualcosa, ma arriva un momento in cui bisogna lasciar perdere. In questo album, però, abbiamo davvero raggiunto la soddisfazione artistica: è esattamente l’album che volevamo e di cui avevamo bisogno. 

In che modo intendete trasporre dal vivo i brani di Midnight Blitz?
Con la stessa ferocia con cui affrontiamo i brani del disco d’esordio: a tutta forza! 

Quali pezzi non vedete l’ora di presentare al pubblico?
Finora abbiamo suonato dal vivo tutti i singoli e la reazione del pubblico è stata fantastica; abbiamo portato in tour anche «Barren Lands & Seas of Red» e dal vivo è stato davvero incredibile. 

Vi sentite parte della nuova ondata di heavy metal tradizionale?
No, non credo che ci identifichiamo con quella scena. In molte di quelle band c’è una mentalità terribile, quella del “soffitto di cristallo”, e io non la condivido né mi ci riconosco in alcun modo. Noi aspiriamo al successo mainstream, quindi credo che questo ci distingua nettamente dalle band che vogliono solo essere “cool” e suonare davanti a 50 persone. 

Quali sono i vostri prossimi obiettivi artistici e professionali?
Portare il nostro Heavy Metal ai quattro angoli della terra e oltre con questo nuovo album! 

Se doveste sintetizzare Midnight Blitz in tre parole, quali usereste?
Heavy Metal Mäyhem! 

Che tipo di reazione sperate di suscitare negli ascoltatori?
Spero che si sentano pieni di energia, come se avessero la forza di affrontare il mondo intero.

The title Midnight Blitz evokes a strong war-related imagery. What does it mean to you, and how does it relate to the album’s themes?
It’s really a metaphor for the band itself. I’ve always loved when bands write songs about themselves, like Rose Tattoo’s Rock N’ Roll Outlaw, Midnight Blitz is the same idea. It’s about us as a band and being a Heavy Metal fan in 2026.

In what ways does this album differ from your debut, both in terms of songwriting and sound?
The debut was written whilst the band was still being formed, and recorded over a year before we’d ever played live. This time, we’d been out on the road playing over 100 shows and sharing stages with legendary names, so everything we learned can be found on the new album.

What was the main creative starting point for Midnight Blitz?
There wasn’t one starting point, just the desire to move forward improving everything that we did on the debut.

Is there a concept or a thematic thread that links the songs together?
There’s a running theme on this album of death, the finite nature of life, dealing with your own mortality and the journey into the unknown of the afterlife.

Your style is rooted in classic heavy metal. Which bands or artists influenced this new record the most?
All the obvious ones, and lesser known bands too. Maiden, Priest, Helloween, Megadeth, Dio, Mercyful Fate, Saxon, Demon, Grim Reaper, so many!

Did you change your songwriting approach compared to your previous work?
No, but theres certainly the intention and desire on this album to kick down the doors of the mainstream Metal world, which is starting to happen for us, it’s great to see. Someone has to carry the flag for Heavy Metal.

How do you balance melody and aggression within your compositions?
Melody is essential. You have absolutely nothing without hooks. There’s so many bands with a great sound, but the songs pass you by. If something isn’t memorable or catchy, it isn’t going on our albums. Every song has to stand up for itself, but you can have extremely catchy songs that are also aggressive as hell. I look at bands like Bathory or Venom, they’re still packed with memorable hooks.

Is there a track that best represents who Tailgunner are at this stage of your career?
Midnight Blitz! It’s gotta be that one, it’s the title track for a reason and ties together everything this album stands for.

Your lyrics often draw on images of conflict and heroism. Are these based on real historical events or on a more symbolic and abstract dimension?
They’re more symbolic. When we sing about something like war, it’s more about the human side of that, emotionally speaking. We’ll leave the literal interpretations to Sabaton haha!

How important is storytelling in your songs?
I don’t think songs have to go from A – B, there doesn’t have to be a conclusive story told, that rarely interests me. Conveying emotions, ideas or putting someone in a certain world is more important.

Is there a song on the album that has a more personal meaning for you?
Eye of the Storm is the most personal song I’ve ever wrote, about someone I love very much. That’s never happened before, and it might not again.

How was the recording and production process for this album?
It was great! Of course, we worked with KK Downing on this album, so the sessions were intense but overall, an easy process. The album was recorded over a period of 6 months, going in and out of the studio so we could live with the material whilst recording it. 

Did you face any particular challenges during the studio sessions?
Just our level of perfectionism. We’re extremely brutal with one another about standards, so we drive each other insane with doing things hundreds of times until they’re right.

At what point did you realize the album was finished?
You can always do more, always more work on something but it reaches a point you have to let go. On this album, we really achieved artistic satisfaction though, it’s exactly the album we wanted, and needed, to make.

How do you plan to translate the new songs to the live stage?
As savagely as we do with tracks for the debut, just full force!

Which tracks are you most looking forward to playing live?
We’ve played all the singles so far live and the response has been killer, we’ve also taken ‘Barren Lands & Seas of Red’ on the road and that’s been killing for us live.

Do you feel part of a new wave of traditional heavy metal?
No, I don’t think we fit that scene. There’s a horrible ‘glass ceiling’ mindset with a lot of those bands and I don’t share that, or identify with that whatsoever. We have a desire for mainstream success so I think that really sets us aside from the bands that just want to be ‘cool’ and play to 50 people.

What are your next artistic and professional goals?
To take our Heavy Metal to the four corners of the earth and beyond on this new record!

If you had to sum up Midnight Blitz in three words, what would they be?
Heavy Metal Mäyhem!

What kind of reaction do you hope to provoke in listeners?
I hope they feel empowered, like they have the strength to take on all the world.
