Scar Of The Sun – Intervista al cantante Terry Nikas

Scar Of The Sun – Intervista al cantante Terry Nikas

In occasione dell’uscita del terzo album in studio “Inertia”, prevista per venerdì 14 maggio su etichetta Napalm Records, ho avuto il piacere di intervistare Terry Nikas, cantante della metal band band greca Scar Of The Sun.

Ciao Terry, benvenuto su Tuttorock, come stai?

Tutti conoscono i pipistrelli e sanno come trasportano molte malattie.

Ovviamente!

** ENGLISH VERSION **

On the occasion of the release of the third studio album “Inertia”, scheduled for Friday 14 May on Napalm Records label, I had the pleasure of interviewing Terry Nikas, singer of the Greek metal band Scar Of The Sun.

Hi Terry, welcome to Tuttorock, how are you?

Hello and thank you very much for hosting us! We are doing very well, hope you are doing the same in these difficult times we all live.

Let’s talk a bit about this new album, “Inertia”, which will be released on May 14th on Napalm Records. I appreciated it very much, did you were 100% satisfied when you listened to it the first time?

We are really happy that you liked the album, it is very important for us to get positive feedback! We are absolutely satisfied with the album, we would never accept to release an album that we wouldn’t be happy with. We are making music for ourselves first and most and we are perfectionists. As a result, it is important first of all to compose songs that we like to listen and then work on all the details so they will add to the final result. Everything should be worked in depth, we leave nothing to luck because as Depeche Mode said once, everything counts (he laughs – Editor’s note).

When did you write the 11 songs?

The songs were composed after the release of our previous album “In Flood”. It took about a year to compose all 11 songs and we started recording in 2017, but we took our time and finished the first mixing draft in 2019.

How is your song usually born?

Hmmm, depends. Most of the times, someone brings a few ideas to the band and we are trying to work around them. Sometimes, the guys bring ready songs and if we like them, we use them like that, if there are parts that some of us don’t like, we are trying to change them until all of us are happy. Some other times, we have some vocal lines and we build the music around them until we finish a whole song. The main way though is that someone brings a complete song, we work around it and vocals come last. We feel that we work better like that.

How did the album recording process happen?

As I said before, we recorded everything before the pandemic and it took some time to release the album because we were trying to find a better deal and also because of the pandemic. All the bands are trying to release their albums closer to the time that tours will resume. The only thing that happened during covid was that I mixed the album again because there were a few things I didn’t like much on the first mix. So we were not affected at all. But even if we had to record it during the pandemic, we are recording in my studio, so that wouldn’t be a problem.

Who made the artwork?

Achilleas Gatsopoulos is responsible for all our visuals. He was the original drummer of the band when we started, he is the brother of our bassist and my best friend. So he is the sixth member of the band in a way. Achilleas did all the 3 covers of our albums plus the demo cover and he did all our videos. He is an extremely talented graphic designer and film director and every time he manages to capture the deep meenings of our lyrics to his artworks. He is the one that gave us the visual identity we have and we are so lucky to have him next to us. He even designed our stage clothes.

Money is killing humanity, is this the summary of your lyrics?

Not really, greed is killing humanity. Money and power are just tools that greed uses in order to destroy humanity. Also humans are killing humanity. The real virus is us, the human beings. It is amazing how during the last 100 years that we had the industrial revolution, we destroyed the planet in a level that is borderline reversible. Someone would think that the industrial revolution means that humans are extremely clever but the destruction of the earth shows that these “clever” people destroyed their own home, so at the end, we are completely stupid! Covid is another example! Everyone knows about bats and how they carry many deseases. I mean, WHY ON EARTH would someone eat a bat?

By the way, in the Quantum Leap Zero trilogy, you talked about the economic problems that Greece had, how did you, as musicians, experience that period?

In the trilogy I talk about a specific time of the whole financial crisis, the 2015 incidents that finally we had a government that did the right thing and said that that program that was imposed to us was not working, so we proposed to work on making a program that would work. And, instead of that, we got punished for saying the obvious! We lived a much longer crisis, it lasted almost 10 years and then COVID stroke. We cannot live a calm life for the last 11-12 years over here. We are not professional musicians yet, so we had our jobs that were all hit hard from crisis. I mean, income got reduced by 40-50-60%, taxes went 2-3-4 times up, everything became more expensive, so poverty was on more than the 50% of the Greek population. I have a recording studio and my work got reduced significantly, I had to reduce my fees in order to have work, it was really really tough! The music industry had already a crisis due to the illegal downloading and streaming, imagine having a financial crisis on top of that! Musicians in Greece lived a double crisis!

I read nice words about this album from your compatriots Sakis (Rotting Christ) and Seth (Septicflesh), is there a good relationship between the Greek metal bands?

I think that all the bands that are really active in Greece have a mutal respect because they know how hard it is today to do that on a high level. I personally have very good relationship with all the bands. Now I believe that smaller bands have sometimes this chit chat behind your back thing, but this is normal because usually these guys are less experienced, usually younger and this is part of the growing up experience. But I never had problems with any guys from other bands in Greece and never listened about bands that hate each other. You will always have the occasional internet troll that would make bad comments without using his own name, but hey, that doesn’t matter at all because who cares about them? (he laughs – Editor’s note).

Tours with historical bands like Dark Tranquility, Insomnium and Rotting Christ, how much did they make you grow?

The tours made most of the work to make us grow. Everyone was telling that to us and we found out for ourselves too. These are lessons that no university or friend can give you. You learn so much you cannot imagine. From how to structure your music in a way that would work better live, to the whole stage presence and professionalism of the band in every aspect. After all these years, I think that the best decisions we made was to tour in these early stages. If it wasn’t for that, we would never get how to be a proper band, because a tour makes you a real band.

Are you starting to think about a new tour?

Of course! First of all we love touring and that means that we want to start touring again not only because it’s gonna be something like 2 years until we will play again live, but also because touring is feeding our soul! We are in discussions with our booking agent and our label about finding the appropriate tour packages, so hopefully we will have some news in the next few months. It looks like tours will start again towards the end of 2021 or beginning of 2022. So we got plenty of time to work on that.

Thank you very much for your time, would you like to add something and would you like to greet your Italian fans?

We would like to send our regards to beautiful Italy, hope everyone stays safe and get back to our normal lives the soonest possible. Other than that we invite everyone to check out our singles and the videos for the songs “I Am The Circle” and “Inertia” and if they like what they listen, they can check us out. Thank you Marco once again for this great interview and hope to see you on a show soon!
