RED FANG – Intervista al bassista Aaron Beam

You are one of the cornerstones of stoner, how did you come to this genre? What were your first listenings?
First off, thank you very much! Second off, it’s funny you should ask because I think four of the only people in the world who don’t really think of our band as stoner are the four of us. We all share a love of some bands that might be classified as stoner, but when we first started out we were thinking about Soundgarden, Melvins, Black Flag, YOB, Hot Snakes, stuff like that…

You’ve been on major tours, what’s a particular event that happened to you? Or a very strange place where you happened to play?
Well, one of the strangest places to play was probably the recently decomissioned prison in The Netherlands. I don’t remember the exact name of the space, but we played in the old cafeteria, I think. And the prison cells were being used by artists as small studios / retail spaces. It felt very odd.

How excited are you to be sharing the stage with the legendary Melvins in Milan?
Well, sadly, Dale injured his back and is not able to do the tour… sad face!!! We were very excited of course! One of the first shows we ever played was with Melvins, but that was a long long long time ago. I am still excited for the show, though. I love Milan!

You have exceeded 10 million views on Youtube, do you give much importance to the video factor?
Of course! We are certain that nobody would really know who we were without those videos. The first one is the one that really kicked off our whole career as a band.

You’ve played so many world festivals like Wacken, which one are you most attached to?
Well, the first one we ever played was Hellfest, so that one is pretty near and dear. They’ve had us back 3 more times since then, so I hope the feeling is mutual…

Only ghosts has had a great success, but it dates back to 2016. Are you working on a new album?
I am typing this interview from the studio as we speak! We have tracked 6 new songs, and will come back in late September/ early October to do the rest…

How do you share the tasks when creating the songs?
John finds a patch of ground, Bryan digs a hole, David fills it back in with some fresh dirt, and I plant some flowers in it.

What do you like to listen to right now?
The new Helms Alee record, Noctiluca.

How important is the live show for your band?
VERY important! That’s where our roots were planted. Recording was always an afterthought in the beginning.

What’s your relationship with Italy?
Totally love it!! Our first headlining tour of Europe began in Milan, with a few more shows in Italy after that. The crazy overwhelming reaction we got those first few nights really set the tone for the whole tour and made us feel like, oh yes, we can really do this…

Three things you promise those who will come to see you?
Sweat. Energy. Mistakes are not mistakes. Thank you!!
