MORTIIS – Intervista su “Spirit Of Rebellion”

mortiis 1

È molto diverso da come immaginavo all’inizio.

Vercelli?

** ENGLISH VERSION **

On the occasion of the release of the new album “Spirit Of Rebellion”, scheduled for next January 24th, I had the pleasure of talking a bit with Mortiis, a charismatic musician who needs no introduction.

Hi Håvard, or Mortiis, how do the people call you?
Hi Marco, most of the people I know call me Håvard, which is my real name.

Welcome on the pages of Tuttorock, how are you generally doing?
I’m fine thanx, I’m starting the interviews about the new album and I’m getting ready for the new tour that will start in late January in the USA.

Let’s talk about this new album called “Spirit Of Rebellion” which is a reinterpretation of two tracks from your 1994 album “Ånden som Gjorde Opprør”. You changed those tracks a little bit, is it true?
Yes, I started the album with the idea of a reinterpretation but I found new melodies and new sounds in my head so I added more elements to those tracks and changed some old stuff, extending in more longer songs. I call it a continuation, it became a part 2 of the original album. It is very different from I supposed at the start.

You’ve been back to the dungeon synth genre of which you are considered the pioneer, how did your fans react?
I have seen people very excited, the last couple of years I travelled a lot doing a lot of live shows and the response I getting from people was really good. It’s pretty much positive. They tell me there are more projects supposedly inspired by Mortiis, it’s good.

How does it feel to be considered the inventor of a musical genre?
(He laughs – Editor’s note). I’m not the real inventor but I know I started really early to make this kind of music. I was very naïve, I was a young man and I started all down to my keyboard, I put on the tape and I found it like good music. I think that many musicians got a lot of contributes to this kind of music but I appreciate that people give me that kind of credit.

You have your own label, Omnipresence Productions, is it better to self-produce than following the recording industry?
I think for me it is better to self-produce, it’s very hard to sell records now. You can make more money by the big labels but they control your heart so it’s probably better to make it by yourself, it depends from what you are looking for.

The artwork was done by the French illustrator David Thiérrée, do you want to tell me something about him?
Well, I discovered him maybe 3 or 4 years ago. I was searching for an artworker and I was talking to a German label when I saw his works and I contacted him. He response to me that we worked together 20 years ago for an American reissue of an old my record but I totally forgot that. Then he made a lot of artwork for me. We always work on new stuff, it’s a great work relationship, I think his stuff are very perfect for my projects, I’m very please for this collaboration.

A question from the past, with Emperor you were inside the Black Metal Inner Circle, if you see it today, how would you define it?
Probably we were very naive, it was all extreme, I appreciated the creativity, the good music we made, I always feel that way but the burnings of the churches and people murders were bad things, there is no reason you can kill someone and to burn churches to stop the religion. You can contest religion but not burning the churches. I don’t really care about those things but the music that was created in 1991/1992/1993 was very great.

Are you still in touch with the other Emperor guys?
Very randomly we spoke, we send messages to us, we’re still friends now but everyone is very busy with families, kids, jobs. We had more time in early 90’s when we were employed totally in music.

A question for those who do not know you well, the makeups and masks you use are prepared by yourself?
The ideas are mine but the masks are made by a company of Hollywood from very long time, the makeup is mine.

How is the music scene today in Norway?
I have no idea man, I exist in my little, I never leave my house unless I have to, I don’t hang out with anybody unless I have to, the only times I go out is for work and for some live shows and to buy food. A part from that to be honest I having no check out any signals from more of ten years. I live like an hermit.

And how do you see the black metal scene today in general?
I spend a lot of time on social networks and I see the difference, when I was young we went to many concerts, today everybody have fucking tattoos, in my past years all was more darkly, more chaotic, today all seems cleaner. There is a different atmosphere, I like the way we had in 90’s.

Will you do a tour to promote the album? Will you also return to Italy?
I would love to. We ‘ll start the tour from the USA in late January and we are starting to work for a tour in Europe with Italian dates, last time I has been in Italy it was a cool show in…. I don’t remember, it was near Milan…

Vercelli?
Right, yeah!

And will you go back to doing some stuff of industrial rock?
I think in the future yes but I have no idea when. What I’m working now keep many time, it depends on the creativity I’ll have in that moment.

Thank you so much, do you want to say something to your fans?
Thank you Marco, please tell me what do you think about my album on social networks! I hope to return to Italy in 2020, last time I played there it has been only one show, I hope to make more shows next year there, bye!
