JAGUAR JONZE – Intervista alla cantante
In occasione dell’uscita del debutto EP, “Diamonds & Liquid Gold”, in programma per il 17 aprile, ho avuto il piacere di intervistare Jaguar Jonze, un’ interessante artista nata in Giappone ma adottata dall’Australia.
Ciao Jaguar, benvenuta sulle pagine di Tuttorock, prima di tutto, come stai?
Sto molto bene. Oggi è il mio primo giorno senza alcun sintomo da COVID-19, quindi mi sento abbastanza sicura che sto per concludere il mio pieno recupero.
Come stai trascorrendo questo periodo di quarantena?
Ad essere sincera, ho trascorso la maggior parte del mio tempo a riprendermi perché sono stata male a causa del virus, quindi le prime due settimane sono semplicemente volate. C’è comunque molta creatività che mi attende, stavo scrivendo un sacco di canzoni, stavo disegnando, leggendo, cucinando e … mangiando troppo eheh.
Sembra che la natura si stia ribellando, secondo te, dopo questo periodo di emergenza a causa del Coronavirus, la razza umana avrà più rispetto per il nostro pianeta?
Penso che avremo più rispetto reciproco e capiremo l’importanza di lavorare insieme per la sopravvivenza, la sicurezza e la salute. Apprezzeremo le cose quotidiane che potremmo dare per scontate come la natura e l’interazione nei rapporti umani, l’intrattenimento, la famiglia, gli amici, le piccole cose, la musica e l’arte.
Venerdì 17 aprile uscirà il tuo EP di debutto “Diamonds & Liquid Gold”, l’ho ascoltato e l’ho trovato molto bello e interessante, come sono nate le sei canzoni?
Ognuna di esse ha la propria storia. Ho iniziato a lavorare su questo EP oltre 18 mesi fa e direi che ognuno dei brani è un po’ una capsula temporale che racchiude ciò che stavo vivendo in quel momento.
I testi sono autobiografici?
Decisamente. La musica per me è molto personale ed è come un diario e un metodo di catarsi per sollevare il peso dalle mie spalle e dalla mia testa.
Nelle tue canzoni sento influenze di vari tipi di musica, quali sono gli artisti che ami di più?
Adoro artisti come Portishead, Jeff Buckley, Nick Cave, Angel Olsen, The Last Shadow Puppets e Beck.
Su Youtube ho trovato la tua bellissima cover di “Heart Shaped Box” dei Nirvana con Hermitude alle tastiere, come è nata questa idea?
Mi hanno contattata e mi hanno chiesto se sarei stata disposta a cantare nella loro cover. Ho pensato che la cover fosse una via di mezzo perfetta in entrambi i nostri mondi: il mondo elettronico di Hermitude e la natura primordiale e cruda del modo in cui mi esibisco.
I tuoi video sono molto artistici, vengono dalle tue idee?
Sì! Dirigo ogni elemento della mia musica dalla cura dell’artwork agli abiti e ai video. Certo, questo sarebbe impossibile senza l’aiuto di amici dal grande talento intorno a me. Le idee di solito nascono quando scrivo la canzone o quando la sto registrando. Quando la mia mente è immersa nella canzone, amo pensare a come vorrei ricrearla visivamente. Poi arrivano le idee selvagge.
Da dove viene il tuo nome d’arte Jaguar Jonze?
Il nome viene dai fan e dagli amici. È iniziato come un nome del mio alter ego perché c’è molta differenza da come sul palco e da come sono normalmente. Penso che molto del mio dolore esca sul palco e mi comporto in modo molto diverso. Quindi, quando stavo pensando a un nome per questo progetto, è stato scelto quello perché significava qualcosa per me e qualcosa che mi è stato dato.
So che sei nata in Giappone, quando ti sei trasferita in Australia?
Mi sono trasferita in Australia quando avevo 6 anni!
Canti molto bene, hai frequentato qualche scuola di canto o sei autodidatta?
Sono autodidatta. In realtà non ho iniziato a cantare fino a quando non ho lasciato il liceo. Non avrei mai pensato di poter cantare e ci è voluto un po’ per trovare la mia voce.
So che hai partecipato all’Eurovision Australia Decides 2020, esibendoti di fronte a molti spettatori, com’è andata questa esperienza?
È stata una delle migliori esperienze della mia vita. A quel tempo, ero davvero spaventata e nervosa, ma anche entusiasta di spingermi fuori dalla mia zona di comfort e mostrare alle persone chi sono come artista. Ho guadagnato molti grandi fan e molto supporto da quell’esperienza, quindi mi sento davvero grata di aver fatto parte di essa.
Ho letto anche che ami la fotografia e l’arte dell’illustrazione, cosa puoi dirmi di queste due passioni?
Per me la creatività è davvero molto importante per il mio benessere mentale. Il mio progetto di fotografia è sotto il nome di Dusky Jonze ed è una conversazione con il corpo: esplorare le vulnerabilità, i tabù e le insicurezze che tendiamo ad avere con i nostri corpi. Il mio obiettivo è cercare di evidenziare la bellezza di ogni forma, linea, forma, grumo, curva e dimensioni. Le mie illustrazioni sono sotto il moniker di Spectator Jonze e coinvolgono un dialogo più profondo con le persone e i loro viaggi personali. Lo spettatore Jonze è un veicolo per loro di esprimere e condividere e per tutti noi di imparare da ogni esperienza. Intervisto ogni persona e poi disegno un ritratto di ciò che hanno generosamente condiviso con me. Potrebbe trattarsi delle loro ansie, vizi, abitudini, trionfi, ostacoli, demoni, lezioni ecc.
Qual è il tuo più grande sogno musicale?
Il mio più grande sogno musicale è poter vivere facendo l’artista. Voglio essere in grado di creare, scrivere, esibirmi ovunque e comunque, senza preoccuparmi di dove sarà il mio prossimo pasto e di quale rifugio avrò sopra la mia testa. Al momento, sto ancora lottando come artista emergente.
Con il mondo praticamente fermo, come stai organizzando il tuo tour?
È difficile perché non conosciamo la data di fine di questa pandemia. Possiamo solo indovinare, quindi al momento sto riprogrammando i tour per ottobre, ma in realtà non ci resta che attendere e vedere.
Grazie mille, vuoi dire qualcosa ai lettori di questa intervista?
È un momento molto triste per tutto il mondo, ma il mio cuore si spezza quando leggo dell’Italia. Mi sento davvero commossa nel poter entrare in contatto con i lettori italiani e spero che un giorno sarò in grado di venire ad esibirmi per tutti voi. Per ora, voglio solo darvi un pezzo del mio cuore e incoraggiare ogni persona a rimanere forte. Supereremo questo e diventeremo ancora più forti. Abbiate cura di voi stessi e degli altri.

On the occasion of the release of the debut EP, “Diamonds & Liquid Gold”, scheduled for April 17th, I had the pleasure of interviewing Jaguar Jonze, an interesting Japanese-born but Australian-adopted artist.
Hi, welcome on the pages of Tuttorock, first of all, how are you?
I’m actually really great. Today is my first day without any COVID-19 symptoms so I’m feeling quite positive that I’m about to make my full recovery.
How are you spending this quarantine period?
To be honest, I’ve spent most of my time recovering as I’ve been sick with the disease myself so the first two weeks definitely just flew by. Otherwise, there’s a lot of creativity happening in my corner – I’ve been doing a lot of songwriting, drawing, reading, cooking and.. too much eating hehe.
It seems that nature is rebelling, in your opinion, after this period of emergency due to Coronavirus, will the human race have more respect for our planet?
I think if anything, we will have more respect for each other and the importance in working together for survival, safety and health. We will be appreciative of the everyday things we might’ve taken for granted like touch, nature, human interaction, entertainment, family, friends, small businesses, music and art.
On Friday 17th your debut EP “ Diamonds & Liquid Gold ” will be released, I listened to it and I found it very beautiful and interesting, how did the six songs come about?
Each have their own story. I started working on this EP over 18 months ago and I would say each serve as a bit of a time capsule to what I was going through at that time.
Are the lyrics autobiographical?
Definitely. Music for me is very personal and is like a diary and method of catharsis to lift the weight off my shoulders and out of my head.
In your songs I hear influences of various types of music, which are the artists you love most?
I love artists like Portishead, Jeff Buckley, Nick Cave, Angel Olsen, The Last Shadow Puppets and Beck.
On Youtube I found your beautiful cover of Nirvana’s Heart Shaped Box with Hermitude on the keyboards, how did that idea come about?
They reached out to me and asked if I’d be willing to sing vocals on their cover. I thought the cover was a perfect middle ground into both of our worlds – Hermitude in the electronic world and the primal, raw nature in how I perform.
Your videos are very artistic, do they come from your ideas?
Yes! I art direct every element in my music from the artworks to the outfits to the videos. Of course, it’s impossible without the help of really talented friends around me. The ideas usually come about when I write the song or when I’m recording. When my mind is immersed in the song, I love thinking about how I would want to recreate the song visually. Then the wild ideas come.
Where does your stage name Jaguar Jonze come from?
The name came from fans and friends. It started as an alter ego name because I was so different on stage to how I am in person. I think a lot of my pain comes out on the stage and I carry myself quite differently outside of that. So when I was thinking about a name for this project, it stuck because it meant something to me and was given to me.
I know you were born in Japan, when you moved to Australia?
I moved to Australia when I was 6 years old!
You sing really well, did you attend some singing school or are you self-taught?
I’m self-taught. I actually didn’t really start singing until I left high school. I never thought I could sing and it took a while to find my voice.
I know that you participated in the Eurovision Australia Decides 2020, performing in front of many viewers, how did that experience go?
It was one of the best experiences I’ve had. At the time, I was really scared and nervous but also excited to push myself out of my comfort zone and show people who I am as an artist. I’ve gained a lot of great fans and support from that experience so I feel really appreciative to be a part of it all.
I also read that you love photography and the art of illustration, what can you tell me about these two passions?
For me, creativity is really important for my mental wellbeing. My photography is under the name of Dusky Jonze and it is a conversation with the body – to explore the vulnerabilities, taboos and insecurities we tend to have with our bodies and my aim is to try and highlight the beauty of every form, line, shape, lump, curve and size. My illustrations are under the moniker of Spectator Jonze and it involves a deeper dialogue with people and their own personal journeys. Spectator Jonze is a vehicle for them to express and share and for all of us to learn from each experience. I interview each person and then draw a portrait of what they generously shared with me. It could be about their anxieties, vices, habits, triumphs, obstacles, demons, lessons etc.
What is your biggest musical dream?
My biggest musical dream is to live a sustainable career as an artist. I want to be able to create, write, perform anywhere and everywhere without worrying about where my next meal will come from and what shelter I will have over my head. At the moment, it is still a struggle as an emerging artist.
With the world practically stopped, how are you organizing your tour?
This one is hard because we don’t know the end date to this pandemic. We can only guess – so at the moment I am rescheduling tours for October but in reality, we just have to wait and see.

It’s a very sad time for the whole world, but my heart breaks when I read about Italy. I feel really touched that I can connect with readers in Italy and hope that one day I will be able to come over and perform for you all. For now, I just want to give a piece of my heart and to encourage each person to stay strong. We will get through this and become even stronger. Look after yourself and each other.
