DEATHSTARS – Intervista al cantante Whiplasher Bernadotte
In occasione dell’uscita del nuovo album “Everything Destroys You” (Nuclear Blast Records), ho avuto il piacere di intervistare Whiplasher Bernadotte, cantante della band industrial metal svedese Deathstars.
Ciao Whiplasher, “Everything Destroys You” è il vostro nuovo album, un disco che arriva più di 8 anni dopo il precedente “The Pefect Cult”, perché abbiamo dovuto aspettare così tanto?
Ciao Marco! Sono felice di parlare con voi italiani, ho abitato a Firenze, in zona Santa Croce, qualche anno fa!
Riguardo alla tua domanda, non so il perchè. Siamo stupidi, sai?
Penso che sia stata anche colpa della pandemia, no?
Ovviamente. Abbiamo perso diversi anni a causa di ciò, ma anche quando abbiamo fatto l’ultimo tour in Nord America e in Canada, eravamo stufi e volevamo prenderci una pausa. Ci sono voluti un paio d’anni e poi abbiamo iniziato a scrivere canzoni e poi un altro paio d’anni per finire l’album, l’artwork è stato posticipato e abbiamo iniziato a riscrivere le canzoni e ne abbiamo anche scritte delle nuove. Quasi nove anni in tutto, è folle ma non ci è sembrato un tempo così lungo. Anche se è una specie di ritorno perché è passato così tanto tempo, la band non è mai stata inattiva.
Mi sono piaciute tutte e 10 le tracce allo stesso modo, posso dire che, forse per la prima volta nella vostra carriera, non ci sono tracce che vengono prima di altre ma è un album da ascoltare dall’inizio alla fine?
Sì. È importante per noi avere lo stesso tipo di atmosfera nelle nostre canzoni e dovrebbe sembrare che appartengano tutte allo stesso ambiente. Tutte si intrecciano le une con le altre ma è ancora più importante, però, che ogni traccia potrebbe vivere per sé senza la successiva o la precedente. Capisco quello che stai dicendo, è un’ottima cosa.
Parliamo del titolo dell’album, “Everything destroys you”, è una sorta di rassegnazione a questi tempi in cui tutto sembra ormai perduto?
In realtà no, il titolo riguarda le relazioni, in particolare la parte distruttiva di una relazione, tutto ti distrugge quando ti è vicino e così via. Penso che sia anche un ottimo titolo per l’album perché tutto ti distrugge a un certo punto, voglio dire, qualunque cosa, anche se la ami, ti distruggerà. E poi c’è una sorta di tipico umorismo nero dei Deathstars, quindi è un titolo adatto per l’album e per noi.
Sono già stati pubblicati 3 singoli, “This Is”, “Midnight Party”, “Angel of Fortune and Crime”, che feedback hai avuto dai vostri fan?
Sì, il fatto è che non vado mai a controllare il feedback. Ma perché? Perché semplicemente non lo faccio. Ma sembra che ci sia stata un’ottima risposta da quello che ho sentito dai miei compagni di band e anche dall’etichetta, quindi sono molto contento. E anche tu dici che ti piace l’album? Quindi sì, è bello sentire ciò.
Parlando dell’artwork, la copertina torna a mostrare i 4 membri storici dei Deathstars, non succedeva dai tempi di “Termination Bliss”, se escludiamo “The Greatest Hits on Earth”, è il vostro modo di dire, nonostante tutto siamo ancora qui?
Non saprei. Con il titolo dell’album abbiamo praticamente dato mani libere al ragazzo che ha realizzato l’artwork. Quindi potresti anche voler descrivere una specie di struttura di come vorresti che appaia ma poi è qualcun altro che ha dato il suo aspetto alla musica, per così dire, e penso che la copertina sia davvero bella perché non è tipica del nostro genere o di questo tipo di universo in cui esiste la band. È un po’ diversa perché non avevamo la band sulla copertina dell’ultimo album. È stato bello farlo così, sono il più grande fan dei Kiss e sai, mi piace tutto il rock and roll dove di solito la band è sulla copertina.
Festeggiate anche i 20 anni dal primo album “Synthetic Generation”, pensando al 2002/2003, avresti mai pensato di essere ancora qui a parlare della nuova musica dei Deathstars e dei nuovi concerti?
Beh, no, non pensiamo mai a più di un anno o due anni più avanti. Non abbiamo mai avuto un piano con la band, per così dire, ed è molto strano che lo facciamo ancora dopo 20 anni. Siamo ancora qui ed è praticamente la stessa cosa per noi, semplicemente riprendiamo da dove siamo finiti o da dove non siamo mai finiti. È come se fosse ancora il 2002 oggi, praticamente buono in senso negativo.
All’inizio alcuni critici dicevano che vi stavate avvicinando molto al suono dei Rammstein, anche se avevate già un vostro stile molto personale, questo vi infastidiva o vi rendeva orgogliosi?
Guardiamo sempre noi stessi, il che in realtà è super stupido perché trai comunque ispirazione o provi a raggiungere altre aree, ma guardiamo noi stessi e i Deathstars dovrebbero suonare come i Deathstars, abbiamo quel tipo di espressione e così via e non sono al passo con le nuove band. Quindi ascolto solo vecchi album più e più volte. Quindi forse è per questo che sono bloccato in questo.
Quindi il tuo gruppo preferito sono ancora i Kiss?
Sì, ma amo anche Kim Wilde, Darkthrone, Mayhem, Morbid Angel e il punk rock, come vedi è tutta vecchia musica. Cerco di ascoltare molta musica di oggi, ma se devo dire che mi piace molto una band non avrei nessun nome da farti.
Qual è stato il tuo momento migliore e peggiore finora con i Deathstars?
Penso che le parti più divertenti siano sempre state i tour o gli spettacoli dal vivo e quando ci divertiamo davvero insieme, è fantastico. Poi ci sono periodi in cui ci sono molti conflitti o lotte, ma penso che la ragione per cui siamo una band sia divertirci insieme.
A proposito, state già programmando un tour? Verrete anche in Italia?
Sì, proprio ora e nelle ultime settimane dopo che molte date del tour sono state spostate o posticipate per noi, è stato orribile anche per tutti coloro che vogliono venire a vedere la band. È stato molto stressante quando non siamo stati in grado di andare in tour e tutto era stato pianificato. Comunque, sembra che abbiamo il programma del tour e stiamo solo aspettando che sia ufficiale. E sì, molto probabilmente l’Italia sarà in programma.
Qual è la tua cosa preferita del mio paese?
Qualunque cosa. Sono sempre stato un grande fan dell’Italia e vogliamo tornare nel vostro paese, io e la mia famiglia. La mia ragazza è una stilista di scarpe, quindi vive lì, sai, facendo servizi fotografici. È un paese fantastico con molta storia in ogni mattone della città. Quindi lo adoro. Abbiamo molti italiani in Svezia e non riesco proprio a capire ciò. Mi piacerebbe vivere lì per il resto della mia vita.

Grazie Marco, sarebbe bello se il maggior numero possibile di fan potesse assistere ai nostri show e se ne avessimo di più in Italia. Spero di vedervi lì!

On the occasion of the release of the new album “Everything Destroys You” (Nuclear Blast Records), I had the pleasure of interviewing Whiplasher Bernadotte, lead singer of the Swedish industrial metal band Deathstars.
Hi Whiplasher, “Everything Destroys You” is your new album, a record that comes more than 8 years after your previous one “The Pefect Cult”, why did we have to wait so long?
Hi Marco! I’m happy to talk to you Italians, I lived for in Florence, in the Santa Croce area a few years ago!
About your question, yeah, because I don’t know. We’re stupid, you know?
I think it was also the pandemic’s fault, right?
Of course. Several years just went away because of that but also when we did the last North American tour in US and Canada, we were fed up and we just wanted a break. It took a couple of years and then we started to write songs and then another couple of years to finish the album, artwork postponed and we started to rewrite the songs and we wrote new songs too. Almost nine years, it’s insane but it hasn’t felt that long for us, even though it’s kind of a comeback thing because it’s been so long, but the band has never been not active.
I enjoyed all 10 tracks equally, can I say that, perhaps for the first time in your career, there are no tracks to listen to first but is it an album to listen to from the beginning to the end?
Yeah. It’s important for us to have the same kind of vibe in our, in the songs and it should feel like it’s, they all belong to the same environment. Everything kind of entwines with each other but it’s even more important though, is that every track could live for itself without the next one or the previous one. I understand what you’re saying, it’s a good thing.
Let’s talk about the title of the album, “Everything destroys you”, is it a sort of resignation in these times when everything now seems lost?
Actually no, the title is about the relationships, in particular the destructive part of a relationship, everything destroys you when I’m close and so on. But then I think it was a very good title for the album because everything do destroy you at a certain point, I mean, whatever. Even if you love it, it will destroy you. And then it is kind of typical Deathstars black humor in it and so on so it’s a suitable title for the album and for us.
3 singles have already been released, “This Is”, “Midnight Party”, “Angel of Fortune and Crime”, what feedback have you had from your fans?
Yeah, the thing is, I never really go check the feedback. But why? Because I just don’t do that. But it seems like it’s been very good response from what I hear from my band mates and also from the label and so on. So I’m very pleased. And you too say that you like the album? So yeah, it’s nice to hear.
Speaking of the artwork, the cover returns to show the 4 historical members of the Deathstars, it hasn’t happened since the days of “Termination Bliss”, if we exclude “The Greatest Hits on Earth”, it’s your way of saying, despite everything we are still here?
I don’t know. With the album title we pretty much gave free hands to the guy that has done the artwork. So you may want to describe kind of the framework of how we want it to look like. But but then it’s someone else who put their aspect on the music, so to speak and I think that the cover art was really nice because it wasn’t typical for our genre or in this kind of community or universe that the band exists within. It was a bit different because we didn’t have the band on the cover on the last album. It was nice to do it like that. But I don’t know. I’m the biggest Kiss fan and You know, I like all kind of rock and roll and usually the band is on the cover.
You also celebrate 20 years since the first album “Synthetic Generation”, thinking about 2002/2003, would you have ever thought you were still here talking about new Deathstars music and new shows?
Well, no, we never think more than one year ahead or two years. We never had a plan with the band, so to speak and it’s super weird that we still do this after 20 years. We can still are here and it’s pretty much the same thing for us, we just pick it up where we ended or where we never ended. It’s like it’s 2002 still today, pretty much good in a bad way.
At the beginning some critics said that you were getting very close to the sound of Rammstein, even though you already had your own very personal style, did this annoy you or make you proud?
We always look at ourselves, which is actually super stupid because you get inspiration or try to other areas but we look at ourselves and Deathstars should sound like Deathstars, we have that kind of expression and so on and I don’t keep really up to date with new bands at all either. So I only listen to old albums over and over again. So maybe it’s that’s why I’m stuck in this.
So your favorite band is still Kiss?
Yes, but i also love Kim Wilde, Darkthrone, Mayhem, Morbid Angel and punk rock, everything is old music. I try to listen to a lot of music of today, but if I have to say I like very much one band I don’t have any name.
What has been your best and worst moment so far with the Deathstars?
I think the funniest parts have always been the touring or the live shows and when we have a really good time together, then it’s fantastic. Then you have periods where there are a lot of conflicts or like when you’re struggling but I think the reason for us as being a band is having fun together with the other guys.
By the way, are you already planning a tour? Will you also come to Italy?
Yeah, I think that because just now or last few weeks since a lot of tour dates have been moved or postponed for us, which has been horrible also for everyone who wants to come and watch the band. It’s been very stressed when we haven’t been able to go on tour and that had been planned. But anyway, it seems like we got the tour schedule and we’re just waiting for it to be official. And yeah, Italy’s most likely on the schedule.
What is your favorite thing of my country?
Everything. I’ve always been a huge fan of Italy and we want to move back to your country, me and my family. My girlfriend is a shoe designer, so she’s been living there, you know, doing shoots. It’s a fantastic country with history in every brick of the city. So I love it. We have many Italians in Sweden and I can’t really get it. I would love to live there for the rest of my life.
