Armored Dawn – Intervista alla metal band brasiliana

armored dawn

Timo: Lo scorso ottobre avevamo pubblicato “Viking Zombie” in modo indipendente.

Rafael: Finora abbiamo fatto 4 tour in Europa.

Timo: Praticamente sottoterra.

State programmando un tour?

Armored Dawn Viking Zombie 1

** ENGLISH VERSION **

On the occasion of the release of the deluxe edition of the album “Viking Zombie”, scheduled for today, Friday March 20, I had the pleasure of interviewing Rafael Agostino and Timo Kaarkoski, keyboard player and guitarist of the Brazilian viking metal band Armored Dawn.

Hi guys, welcome on the pages of Tuttorock, how’s it going in general?

Rafael: Well, like the rest of the world, the damn Corona virus pretty much stopped everything and basically we are all at home, playing our guitars, hanging around with our pets and waiting for time pass by…

Why did you decide to make this new version of your amazing album “Viking Zombie”?

Timo: Well, we had released ‘Viking Zombie’ last October in an independent way. After that, we received a proposal from The Orchard/Sony, to re-release the album. They asked us something different for this edition, and we decided to add three songs that are very important to us.

Tell me a little bit about the tracks you added in this version.

Rafael: As Timo said, these three songs are very special to us. The track ‘Skydiver of the Light’ has particular significance. At the end of 2019, our light engineer, who was a skydiver, had an accident in a parachute jump, and died. So, immediately we decided to pay a tribute to him. This song is the way we found to thank him for his friendship and for being such a great person. ‘Ragnarok (Unplugged)’ was just a trial to make something different and it was so well accepted by the listeners that has been in the first place of the most requested songs in a big radio here in Brazil, that we wanted to add it in the deluxe edition. At last, there’s ‘Animal Uncaged (Live)’, which was chosen because it’s from our live performance at RockFest, a festival that happened here in Sao Paulo, where we played with Europe, Helloween, Whitesnake and Scorpions. That show was very special to us, we had an amazing public’s response, we got really surprised.

“Viking Zombie” was released last October, how’s it going?

Timo: Amazingly. When you put a new album out, you never know if people are actually going to like it or not. We are mostly hearing very positive comments about it, so we are pretty pleased with that. As soon as we get on tour, things will get even better, as there’s a lot of people still not familiar with the band, but after seeing us live, many of them run to get a cd as well. We all know that record sales are down, but touring always boosts up things.

Would you like to tell me a little bit about the video “Zombie Viking”? Where did you make it? Who is the director?

Rafael: We did the video in an old abandoned beer factory over here in Sao Paulo, and Leonardo Liberti from Libertà Films (Dee Snider, Angra, Megadeth) has directed us. The part of the band took about 1 day, and the rest of the story, another day. The video was originally maybe 9 minutes long, but we figured it got way too long, so we cut lots of parts. Who knows, someday we release a longer version, like a short film or something.

How is an Armored Dawn song born?

Timo: Basically, Eduardo, our singer, comes up with lyrics and the main vocal lines and the band works around those. Sometimes one of the guys comes up with an idea for an entire song, and sometimes we build a song from small ideas from everyone. It’s pretty much a team effort.

How did the idea of playing viking metal for you who live so far from Europe come about?

Timo: Well, I’m originally from Finland, so it’s pretty much in my blood, but the main idea was from Eduardo. He’s always been interested in reading all kinds of historical battle stories, and got very exited about Vikings. It started already in our first album, “Power of Warrior”, and from there, we got deeper and deeper into that. We don’t actually consider us a Viking metal band. For me, Viking metal is bands like Amon Amarth… I think we are more like a power metal band, writing songs with Viking theme.

When you play in Europe, how does the audience welcome you?

Rafael: We did 4 tours in Europe so far. We were touring with Fates Warning, Saxon and Hammerfall, and did a short tour on our own. Especially when we open for other bands, you can clearly see that most people are not at all familiar with us, so in the beginning everyone pretty much just stands and stares. But after few songs, they start moving, and some even singing the chorus for some songs. That’s pretty damn cool. After the show is over, we sell a lot of albums and t-shirts, and our digital platforms fill up with new people.

For those who still don’t know you, when you decided to form Armored Dawn and who thought about the name of the band?

Timo: The band was born around 6 years ago when Eduardo, decided to form a band as he had written a lot of songs, but didn’t have a band. He met with Rafael (keyboards), who’s an old friend of mine, so he asked me to join the band. Then we got the rest of the guys together, started practicing and playing around Brasil. 3 albums and few line-up changes later, here we are, ready to rock the hell out. As soon as the damn corona thing is over…

Which are the artists of the past and present that you like?

Timo: I started listening to bands like Led Zeppelin, Cream, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple when I was 5 years old. I always hated those stupid, happy kids songs. These are the bands I mostly listen today as well. For more new bands, or should I say “new”, I’d go for Iron Maiden, Dream Theater and lets say, Fates Warning…

Are you satisfied with how things have gone for you in the world of music so far?

Rafael: No bigger complains, but being a musician ain’t easy, but if you want an easy life, start working in a bank or something. But, then you probably never get to experience what musicians get to experience. Being able to turn your hobby into profession is the best thing in the world. It might not be financially the smartest choice, but it’s a hell of a lot better than working in a bank.

How is the current situation for metal music in Brazil?

Timo: Pretty much underground. Big bands like Iron Maiden still fill up 70 000 people stadiums, but a lot of great, Brazilian bands still play in small bars for 20 people… If that same band decides to turn into an Iron Maiden cover band, they will easily play for 500. For some unexplained reason, Brazilians love cover bands, so life is very difficult for those who play their own songs. Just when you get recognized outside of brazil, people start paying attention.

Are you planning a tour? Will you also come to Europe and Italy in the future?

Timo: Yes, of course. We were supposed to start touring in Brazil and Latin America in April, but the damn Corona virus postponed those plans into the future. As soon as everything gets better, we plan new dates for all those shows. Europe will also be seeing some Armored Dawn this year, if things go as planned. And, of course, we want to be back in Italy again to play some LOUD Rock n Roll music, eat some pizzas, meet old and new friends, maybe see some of the best football in the world, and rock the Hell out.

Thanks a lot guys, would you like to greet the readers of this interview and your Italian fans?

Timo: Stay metal, keep supporting new, local metal bands, as they are the future. Our favorite bands are getting older, and the new Iron Maiden IS out there somewhere. Who knows, they are playing in a small bar, somewhere in Italy…
