APOCALYPSE ORCHESTRA – Intervista alla metal band svedese

In occasione dell’uscita del nuovo album “A Plague Upon Thee” (Despotz Records), che arriva 8 anni dopo la pubblicazione dell’acclamato album di debutto “The End Is Nigh” (2017), ho avuto il piacere di intervistare Mikael Lindström, polistrumentista e corista della metal band svedese Apocalypse Orchestra, che mescola melodie medievali con la terremotante potenza del doom metal, dando così vita a un paesaggio sonoro epico e atmosferico che trasporta gli ascoltatori in un passato lontano.

Ciao e benvenuto su Tuttorock, “A Plague Upon Thee” è il vostro nuovo fantastico album, come sono nati i brani?

Grazie! Dipende, alcuni di loro sono partiti da un riff, altri da una melodia o forse anche da una semplice frase del testo. Di solito raccogliamo un sacco di idee diverse che cerchiamo di mettere insieme. I testi si basano su temi storici che troviamo interessanti, spesso un po’ strani e a volte piuttosto sconosciuti.

Mi piacciono tutti i brani e ogni volta che ascolto l’album il mio preferito cambia, tu, trasformandoti in un ascoltatore, quale brano preferisci?

Ne ho alcuni preferiti. Glass and Sun per esempio, mi piacciono molto le melodie e gli arrangiamenti. Anche Anchorhold, funziona molto bene negli spettacoli dal vivo, è divertente da suonare e il ritornello è facile da cantare.

Chi ha avuto l’idea della copertina e chi l’ha realizzata?

We knew we wanted to work with Cezilia Hjelt Röstberg again, since her art style fits the music so well. We all chipped in with ideas and details and the result was stellar. It is inspired by artists like Hieronymus Bosch and Albrecht Dürer but with a somewhat simpler style. In the old medieval paintings there’s often a lot of things going on, you can look at them for a long time and still find new details.

Quando e com’è nata la band Apocalypse Orchestra?

Intorno al 2013 eravamo tutti divisi tra band. Mi è venuta l’idea di mescolare musica medievale con metal ispirato al doom, dark ed epico, con strumenti e melodie autentiche mescolate a cori e organi apocalittici. Era qualcosa che volevo ascoltare, ma non riuscivo a trovare nessuna band che lo facesse, quindi abbiamo dovuto farlo noi stessi! Abbiamo trovato il nostro sound piuttosto rapidamente e abbiamo iniziato a scrivere canzoni.

C’è un vostro spettacolo che ricordi in modo particolare?

Ce ne sono diversi! Uno dei primi concerti che abbiamo fatto è stato con un’orchestra sinfonica, è stato magico. Anche il Wave Gotik Treffen è stato qualcosa di straordinario, un po’ come una rinascita per la band dopo aver trascorso molto tempo in studio. Mi viene in mente anche un concerto che abbiamo fatto in un club più piccolo in Polonia nel 2023, il pubblico era in delirio!

Se ti chiedessi cinque band o artisti con cui ti piacerebbe condividere il palco, quali nomi mi diresti?

Questa è una domanda difficile. Ascoltiamo tutti musica diversa. Per me Garmarna, dato che sono stati un’influenza enorme musicalmente. Anche Wardruna e Heilung, sarebbe un’esperienza spettacolare, credo. E alla maggior parte di noi piace Myrkur, ci piacerebbe essere suoi musicisti ospiti!

A proposito, avete già pianificato un tour?

Al momento non sono previsti concerti, ma vedremo cosa ci riserverà il futuro!

Come saranno i tuoi concerti questa volta? Darete sempre spazio alla parte teatrale?

Dipende dalle dimensioni del locale e da molti altri fattori. Quando viaggiamo in aereo è troppo costoso portare tutto e tutti quelli che vorremmo. Se potessimo, avremmo sempre con noi flagellanti, medici della peste, ballerini e sputafuoco, ma non siamo ancora arrivati a quel punto.

Vorrei porgervi un sentito GRAZIE per la vostra pazienza e speriamo di vedervi in uno dei nostri show in un futuro non troppo lontano!

On the occasion of the release of the new album “A Plague Upon Thee” (Despotz Records), which comes 8 years after the release of the acclaimed debut album “The End Is Nigh” (2017), I had the pleasure of interviewing Mikael Lindström, multi-instrumentalist and backing vocal of the Swedish metal band Apocalypse Orchestra, who mix medieval melodies with the earth-shaking power of doom metal, thus creating an epic and atmospheric soundscape that transports listeners to a distant past.

Hi and welcome to Tuttorock, “A Plague Upon Thee” is your new amazing album, how were the songs born?

Thank you! It depends, some of them started with a riff, others with a melody or maybe even a simple lyrical phrase. We usually gather a lot of different ideas that we try to piece together. The lyrics are based on historical themes that we find interesting, often kind of weird and sometimes rather unknown.

I like all the songs and every time I listen to the album my favorite song changes, you, turning into listeners, which song do you prefer?

I have a few favourites. Glass and Sun for example, I really like the melodies and arrangements in it. Anchorhold as well, it works really well in live shows, it’s fun to play and the chorus is easy to sing along to.

Whose idea was the cover and who made it?

When and how was the band Apocalypse Orchestra born?

Around 2013 we were all between bands. I came up with the idea of mixing medieval music with doom inspired metal. Dark and epic, with authentic instruments and melodies blended with apocalyptic choirs and organs. It was something I wanted to listen to, but couldn’t find any band that did it, so we had to do it ourselves! We found our sound rather quickly and started writing songs.

Is there a show you’ve done that you particularly remember?

Several! One of the first shows we did was with a symphony orchestra which was magical. Wave Gotik Treffen was also quite something, it felt a bit like a rebirth for the band after spending a really long time in the studio. A gig we did in a smaller club in Poland in 2023 also comes to mind, the audience was wild!

If I asked you five bands or artists you would like to share the stage with, which ones would you say?

That’s a tough one. We all listen to different music. For me it would be Garmarna since they’ve been a tremendous influence musically. Wardruna and Heilung would be a spectacular experience too I believe. And most of us like Myrkur, we would love to be her guest musicians!

By the way, have you already planned a tour?

No gigs planned at the moment, but we will see what the future holds!

How will your concerts be this time? Will you always give space to the theatrical part?

That depends on the size of the venue and lots of other factors. When we go by plane it’s too expensive to bring everything and everyone we would like. If we could we would always have flagellants, plague doctors, dancers and fire breathers with us, but we’re not there quite yet.
